31 January 2024
Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group introduced the “EGCO Ecosystem” internal waste management project to its 13 power plants and the Khanom Learning Center after a remarkably successful implementation at its headquarters. The move is to raise awareness and promote knowledge about waste separation and proper electronic waste (E-waste) management among its employees and encourage positive impact on the environment and society in all areas EGCO Group operates, which will lead to its commitment to achieving low carbon society.
Ms. Salil Tirawat, EGCO Group’s Executive Vice President - Corporate Management, emphasized on the company’s belief that “good start brings the best end” and, therefore, placed high importance on creating good environment and the society from the beginning, starting within the company. In terms of the environment, EGCO Group has implemented sustainable internal waste management project, called “EGCO Ecosystem”, at its headquarters in Bangkok since 2020. As a result, average recycling rate increases to 71.05% and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 47 tCO2e. With such achievement, EGCO Group has introduced the same practice to the group’s 13 power plants in Thailand and Khanom Learning Center in Khanom district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The company has trained its employees about waste separation, raising awareness and encouraging its employees to participate in waste management at work. As a result, its employees have embraced this practice to their own and adopted it as daily routine.
As a member of Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD), EGCO Group has partnered with AIS, a leading telecommunication service provider, in the “Thai Without E-Waste” project. The main objective is to support proper and comprehensive management of E-waste and raise awareness among the general public of the impact from E-waste. At the same time, the project provides the general public with the right place to dispose E-waste that will be recycled properly with zero landfill.
“By implementing the “EGCO Ecosystem” project to our power plants and the Khanom Learning Center and encouraging proper E-waste disposal, we will be able to strengthen EGCO Group’s internal waste management efficiency. This will elevate positive impact on the environment and the general public. In the end, this will lead to low carbon society and enable us to achieve our net zero target in 2050,” said Ms. Salil.
“EGCO Ecosystem” internal waste management project has been well recognized nationally and regionally. It received the “Low Carbon Business: Waste Management Award” certificate from “Vibhavadi Zero Waste” project in 2021 and the “Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards 2022” - Green Leadership, from the Enterprise Asia Institute in 2022. Externally, EGCO Group has expanded the project by providing bins and practices to temples and schools to promote waste sorting.
