Energy-Water Nexus Initiatives

EGCO Group has implemented several initiatives that address the interconnected needs of water and energy use, integrating sustainable water management across its power plants to optimize resource use, reduce environmental impact, and enhance efficiency.

  1. Increasing Water Reuse Cycles in Cooling Towers while retaining energy efficiency:

During the past years, EGCO Group has implemented the project to minimize water consumption in the power plant focusing on optimizing water usage as much as possible. In 2024, EGCO Cogen Power Plant increased water reuse cycles in its cooling tower, reducing wastewater discharge, lowering raw water and chemical use, and preventing scaling as well as calcium and manganese buildup.

  2. Wastewater Treatment and Reuse:

All EGCO plants apply efficient water and wastewater management. Facilities like Banpong Power Plant and EGCO Cogen Power Plant reuse the treated wastewater for gardening and cleaning, reducing water use and operating costs.

  3. Water Footprint Reduction and Rainwater Harvesting:

BLCP has implemented significant measures to reduce water discharge and promote water reuse. In 2014, the company eliminated the use of raw water in its cooling system by adopting desalinated seawater. Since 2021, wastewater from port and coal yard activities has been fully reintegrated into the wastewater treatment system, ensuring no contaminated water is discharged into the sea. Additionally, BLCP has implemented rainwater harvesting systems to collect and reuse rainwater, further reducing reliance on raw or municipal water sources. Similarly, KLU has initiated wastewater treatment projects aligned with ISO 14001 standards, focusing on reducing water use in production and incorporating rainwater harvesting with the goal of minimizing raw water consumption.

Benefits of the Project

  • Reduction of raw water usage in the power plant.
  • Reduction of chemicals used in cooling towers.
  • Reduction of cooling tower management costs.
  • Reduce the amount of wastewater discharged into public water bodies.
  • Reduce the cost of water usage of the power plants.

Implementation Approach

  • Increase the number of water treatment cycles in the cooling tower
  • Reuse the treated wastewater from the wastewater treatment system within the power plant area.
